The Soundscapes of Faith - Winner of Two Awards for Radio

Thank You!

A note from Senior Producer, Laura Kwerel- I was so honored to receive my second award for the Soundscapes of Faith, our six-part series on sacred sound.  Our newest one is for the 2010 Radio Religion Report of the Year, from the Religion Newswriters Association.  Earlier this year, Soundscapes also won the 2010 Wilbur Award for radio, given by the Religion Communicators Council.  So much of the credit goes to my patient editor, Katie Davis, for helping me make this such a simple, sound-rich series.

A thought on the series - As a news-based show we don’t often get a chance to ask our guests essential questions about why they practice a particular religion.  But here, in talking about the prayers, melodies and chants one would hear every day in services, we were able to get at the core of what can make faith so personal.  I decided to focus less on facts and more on feelings, asking every guest, “How do you feel when you hear this sound?” The final result is a series of pieces which I think captures the emotion of religious experience.
